VANESSA C. L'IZILDA
The opulence of grief
The opulence of grief has taken form
wear thy dirge's drapery, darling

Through a mix of fashion design, video production, photography, and poetry, The Opulence of Grief is a multimedia artistic project that reflects on the juxtaposition of grief as a highly personal yet universal feeling.
It explores the paradoxical reality of mourning as both a profoundly felt emotional experience and, in certain socio-economic contexts, a luxury.
This artwork is divided into three Acts, showcasing the artist’s perspective on different stages of grief.
Each Act is materialised through a meticulously constructed garment.
Vanessa drew inspiration from her grandmother and Portuguese background, as well as from Victorian mourning attire and modern artistic practices.

The opulence of grief: Acts

Apatia, communicates mourning through The Izilda Dress – named and inspired by the artist’s late grandmother,
